I'm thinking of buying a robot vacuum cleaner.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Bonus points if they're not sending data to the cloud for some mysterious reason...

UK politics, protest

"Police Chief urged Priti Patel to use Extinction Rebellion ‘opportunity’ to curb protest rights"

“After the courts rightly ruled that the police’s blanket ban on Extinction Rebellion protests last year had been unlawful, it’s extremely worrying that the Metropolitan Police is apparently still seeking to curtail the right to peaceful protest.”

Greenpeace posts a comparison of CO2 emissions between gas, coal, wind and solar based... but they could not resists manipulating the IPCC data they used and remove nuclear power from the picture.

Let's bring it back: nuclear power should be next to Windkraft with 12 gCO2eq/kWh.

Again and again, the ACM continues to be such an embarrassment, and it is clear that there is no existing professional organization for computer scientists that has an ethical backbone.

mathematicians: "haha, look at this -- based on what we know about math right now, there's no way to make certain operations easily reversible."
computer nerds: "cool, we can use this to encrypt data in transit."
mathematicians: "nice. Though don't bet on it always being hard. I mean, we solve hard problems all the time, haha."
cryptocoin nerds: "In fact, we're going to bet trillions of dollars on it remaining hard forever."

COVID-19, NHSX app

Whoops, NHSX forgot to make a set of documents outlining possible future development of the contect tracing app private in their Google Drive.

The contents don't exactly inspire confidence either.

Elon Musk needs a fine from the state of California that's big enough to hurt, a stint in rehab, and a mandatory erasure from our collective consciousness. In whatever order we can arrange.

riot dot im is fine
it's no worse in usability than proprietary chats
y'all just like to ignore when proprietary chats give you random bullshit and forget that ever happened but as soon as something in an open source chat takes 2 clicks instead of one click whoops it's unusable LOL don't use it

Friendly reminder: "X as a service" is just a misleading corporate euphemism for "pay forever for not owning it".

"Software as a service" actually means "pay forever for not owning the software".

"Games as a service" actually means "pay forever for not owning games".

"Infrastructure as a service" actually means "pay forever for not owning the hardware".

And so on.

There is no "cloud", it's just other people's computers

Compare these two quotes:

> When you're working on a really, really good team with great programmers, everybody else's code, frankly, is bug-infested garbage
—Joel Spolsky

> I'll adopt third-party code, but as little as I can get away with, and only if it offers significant, proven benefit[s]… My code may suck, but it's a constant level of sucking that I can plan around.
—Jeff Atwood

They say _basically_ the same thing. And yet, the attitude Atwood expresses seems about 1000% healthier

We're making an attempt to cultivate some yeast from fresh fruit as we can't find any dried yeast in the supermarkets. Hopefully it's as easy as people claim!

I'm looking for some reccomendations around #MentalHealth and #SelfCare. Who are your favourite people, podcasts, etc to follow?
