When you're talking about Linux, it's okay to say that it's "open source".
It's okay to say that it's "free software".
It's okay to call it "GNU/Linux", "Linux", or to mess up its name.
It's okay to refer to it as "the one with the friendly penguin".
Part of RMS' legacy has been an incessant obsession with terminology and pedantry, overshadowing far more important shared objectives which are fundamentally emancipatory in nature.
Pedantry is not activism; it is alienating, not emancipatory.
Tbf, I'm more concerned about the how & why then about RMS himself, the general state of "the community" is worrying on several ends.
We still seem not to have learned that Rock star culture needs to die, no matter how weird "our" Rock stars are & everybody needs to be accountable to the same standards and not just turn up in a board of directors again while the majority of the involved people neither had a clue nor a vote in this.
If you crosspost from twitter to mastodon I would really appreciate it if you marked your account as a bot (see https://superuser.com/a/1439495 for explanation of the effect).
If it's a dual purpose account (i.e. crossposting AND direct posting), then I would appreciate it if you created a separate account for the twitter crossposting and marked that as a bot account.
Crossposted tweets appear as a mess of broken links, missing threads, and the account is often unresponsive to replies.

I hope everyone in the UK catches up on this Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts #PoliceCrackdownBill being rushed through. Unrelated to COVID, it further and permanently restricts our right to protest, with sentences of up to 10 years for causing "serious annoyance" or "inconvenience".
It seems to further restrict even "one-person protests". You can be banned from protesting if you're making too much "noise" or having an "impact [which] may be significant".
Or you know... protesting.
Some people claim that instance-blocking weakens the fediverse, and undermines the point of federation.
This is the opposite of the truth.
The point of federation is that it limits the accumulation of power: no single instance can control fedi, because users can always switch instances without leaving fedi.
This is why fedi and fascism are fundamentally opposed -- and why the ability to block fascist/abusive instances is the very heart of federation's power to serve its users.

I've told this story at conferences - but due to the general situation I thought I'd retell it here.
A few years ago I was doing policy research in a housing benefits office in London. They are singularly unlovely places. The walls are brightened up with posters offering helpful services for people fleeing domestic violen
GitHub has a Nazi problem.
The guy on the left still works at GitHub. The guy on the right was fired :/
Because I am getting too many strange signups in the last 24 hours and most people don't read the Terms of Service, I added a Temporary Notice to Masto.host Pricing page: https://masto.host/pricing/
"If you are looking for an alternative to Parler, this is not it. Please look elsewhere. Thanks."
I hope that's clear enough :)
Anti-American I guess
I was listening to CNBC and CNN on XM last night and good fucking grief Americans love the smell of their own shit. So many “we are the shining light of the world, the best democracy, what will the world do now?”
A lot of us will just keep living our free lives, you fucking assholes*.
